Values, images, specs for the 1807 penny coin from Britain, England, United Kingdom. European Coin Grading System. UK two pound coin values (predecimal) - 1801 to 1967. 2 Pounds (443) 5 Pounds (508) 10 Pounds (128) 20 Pounds (8) 25 Pounds (81). Issued between 1806 and 1807. Coin produced in 1806 has next varieties: 1806, 1806. 1807 Slave Trade £2 Coin. Add to your collection by seeking out an 1807 slave trade £2 coin. The coin was released in general circulation in 2007 and all coins are from this year. The coin was released to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the passing of the Slave Trade Act in 1807, although slavery was not fully abolished.
The specimen version was issued in a Royal Mint folder. It had a superior finish than the standard coin making it more presentable and therefore more highly favoured by collectors. The folders themselves were attractively crafted and informative. The silver proof version was silver in the centre and the outer band was gold plated. The Piedfort proof version was double the weight and thickness of the standard coin. It was made of pure silver and the outer part was made of plated gold.
The Piedfort proof version was part of a collection including another £2 coin from the same year, a £1 coin, a 50p coin and a Diamond Wedding Anniversary Piedfort Crown. Only 3000 of these collections were made. At the time you could buy the collection for £249.95. The £2 coin itself from this collection can be bought for as little as £85 on shopping sites on the internet.
However, as so few were made, the value is only likely to increase with time. The gold proof version, of which only 1000 were made, is highly rare. These sold for £395 at the time and so their value will have greatly increased and will fluctuate between different sellers. Reportedly the gold version could sell for as much as £550 at present, but would be likely to claim a higher price in the future.
Robert Murray Stamp Shop, Edinburgh (Also leading dealers, valuers, and auctioneers of coins. ) U.K. £2 Coins :: How Much Are They Really Worth ? |
There's an awful lot of nonsense online about the value of some modern British coins, particularly the 50p, £1, and £2 ones. We receive many enquiries about these, often from people admitting that they are confused by the conflicting information they have found.
Here's a couple of facts to start with;
{1} Very, very few of the two pound coins are worth anything more than their face value.
{2} People can offer coins online for whatever price they choose.
What we are trying to do here is to give an idea of actual sale prices of these coins. The largest numbers of these sold online in the UK are on Ebay, but we are forever telling people to ignore what people are asking for ('hoping for'), and look at what prices the coins have actually sold at. On Ebay this can be done by clicking the 'sold listings' box.
People are understandably confused when they see lists of these coins, often described as 'very rare', but with hundreds of them on affer at any time !
Methodology; We have looked at each coin, and the prices they currently show as Ebay 'sold' listings. The very highest prices have been ignored, as have the very lowest (these are the glitches and off-the-wall sales, and sometimes might include sales which failed to be completed).
For the best few coins we therefore show prices at the upper end of the range (but not very highest) and at the lower end of the range (but not lowest), and ignore postage (taking a little off any sales which have been 'free postage'). We also show a figure which represents the approximate middle of the bunch.
For the more standard and commoner coins we give a generalisation of sale prices.
We list here only the pictorial/special design £2 coins.
Prices are for standard issue single coins (not proof or silver or gold versions, or special packs etc.). If you are thinking of selling any of the cheaper ones in an online auction, remember that you will have to pay fees out of the sale price.
Note that we do not need to buy any of these coins for stock.
